assumptions and Stereotypes

Here are two ideas for your classroom meetings.  They both touch on assumptions and stereotypes.  Feel free to use both or either as you prepare for your lesson. 

Idea #1: "I Would Assume That..."
Objective: By the end of this session students should be able to:
    -Reflect on ways we make assumptions about others based on our own experiences and biases.
    -Consider how our assumptions may influence the way we treat others both positively and negatively.
    -Describe two goals for challenging their own personal assumptions before interacting with someone they don't know well.

Materials Needed:

    -Class Meeting Idea "Assumptions" Lesson Outline (click link below)
    -"Assumptions" Statements- Handout 39 (click link below)
    -Paper bag or basket
    -Chart paper or Board
    -Stopwatch or Timer

Idea #2: Stereotypes and Assumptions Power Point Presentation created by James Cosby (9th grade student at ASU Prep)
Objective: To identify, research, and share common assumptions and stereotypes
Materials Needed:
-Stereotype and Assumptions Power point Presentation

-A computer and internet access for each student or group of students.

Grades 5-8
Learner Outcomes:
By the end of this session students should be able to
  •  Acknowledge stereotypes they have learned and sometimes act on
  • Examine ways that people learn stereotypes
  • Examine the relationship between stereotypes and biased behaviors
Materials Needed:

  • "Respecting Differences and Eliminating Stereotyping" Class Meeting Outline (get outline from Ms. Elisco)
  • White Board/ Dry Erase Marker
  • Stereotyping movie clips (below)
