Got Empathy?

Grades 5-8
Learner Outcomes:

By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
-define empathy and describe 5 components of empathy
-describe and evaluate their own feelings or reactions in particular situations
-describe factors that help them "read" social cues about what someone else is thinking
-practice viewing situations from a variety of perspectives
-consider ways that factors such as relationships, popularity, gender, and social learning affect their points of view and reactions

Directions: Print out the "Got Empathy" outline (below) and pick one of the two activities to do with your class.  The handout materials for each activity can be printed (right).

Learner Outcomes:
By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
-describe how action is an important aspect of being empathetic or compassionate
-recognize ways to identify what others need and how that might differ from their own needs
-practice ways of responding empathically in different situations and identify a variety of possible reactions based on the recipient's perspective and needs
-describe factors they might need to consider when responding to the needs of others

Directions: Print out the "What Would You Do? "Outline and Handouts below.  Pick one or both activities to use for your class meeting.  The outline and handouts are combined into one document this week.
*This class meeting is meant to follow the "Got Empathy" class meeting.
